Can the Matching Model Account for Spanish Unemployment?

چکیده
This paper aims at explaining the dynamics of labor markets in Spain, especially the high persistence of unemployment and the Beveridge curve. We build a stochastic dynamic general equilibrium matching model, which assumes failures in the matching between vacancies and unemployed. We calibrate the model for the Spanish economy and simulate it considering two sources of exogenous shocks: a technological one and a reallocation one. The model is able to mimic the main stylized facts for the Spanish labor market. Moreover, we show that reallocation shocks are the main source that drive the labor market dynamics. We also analyze the dynamics of the Beveridge curve for Spain. JEL classi...cation: E24, J64

Job Finding and Inflow to Unemployment : The Case of Iran
In order to analyze the labor market through search and matching theory, we need deep parameters namely, rate of inflow to the unemployment pool and job-finding rate. In other words, these rates are primary parameters of matching function; hence, estimating these parameters is an essential step for the use of search and matching theory in every economy. In this paper, we estimate these rates of...

Hiring Freeze and Bankruptcy in Unemployment Dynamics This paper proposes a matching model that distinguishes between job creation by existing firms and job creation by firm entrants. The paper argues that vacancy posting and job destruction on the extensive margin, i.e. from firms that enter and exit the labour market, represents a viable mechanism for understanding the cyclical properties of ...
متن کاملAccounting for Unemployment: The Long and Short of It
Shimer (2012) accounts for the volatility of unemployment based on a model of homogeneous unemployment. Using data on short-term unemployment he finds that most of unemployment volatility is accounted for by variations in the exit rate from unemployment. The assumption of homogeneous exit rates is inconsistent with the observed negative duration dependence of unemployment exit rates for the U.S...
متن کاملEndogenous, State-Dependent Matching with Implications for the Cyclical Behavior of Unemployment
Recent work by Shimer (2005) suggests that the standard search and matching model of the labor market cannot account for the observed volatility in cyclical unemployment under reasonable parametric assumptions. While many extensions and alternative calibration techniques have been employed to better fit the model to data, one assumption that has been maintained is that the process by which work...
متن کاملUncertainty, Productivity and Unemployment in the Great Recession∗
The 2007-2009 recession has witnessed two phenomena that standard search models of the labor market have difficulty reconciling: a large and persistent increase in unemployment and a sharp rise, above pre-recession levels, in labor productivity following a small initial drop. In addition, these observations were accompanied by a significant increase in the dispersion of firm growth rates. In th...
